Mabelvale Elementary School Media Center

The existing media center, located in the center of the Little Rock School District facility and open to the corridors, was a space where the principal, teachers and media specialist thought was antiquated with the young-looking murals, loud due to its location next to the corridors and bathrooms, and simply was not a “cool” place to be. They expressed a need to have a media center that was an exciting place for kids to check out books and get excited about reading.

Herron Horton Architects enclosed the existing media center with translucent Polygal panels and painted the existing concrete block walls with bold colors in a vertical pattern – representing the spines of books. These paint colors were transpired with the colors of the new flooring tiles in the corridor. The existing carpet was replaced, a new circulation desk was designed, and a window seat was built for a place to curl up and read.

The students suggested names of authors which were used for new signage along the corridor walls.
