Our House Children's Center

The Mission

Our House Inc. provides Little Rock’s working homeless with housing, training and youth programs to help them succeed. As part of a capital campaign, the organization aimed to build a learning facility to offer important educational and enrichment opportunities that at-risk children often miss.

The Result

A programming evaluation by Herron Horton Architects revealed the need for a facility to address a variety of programs and space requirements, as well as the unique developmental needs of homeless and near-homeless children. The vibrant center includes a mix of different types of spaces for early childhood, “Little Learners,” and for “Our Club” youth ages 6-18. The new Children’s Center incorporates extensive use of natural light and playful yet practical elements, such as the multi-use room, a safe space where children can jump, climb and express feelings through their bodies as well as a place to be quiet and center themselves.

This modern, flexible facility demonstrates a commitment to ending the cycle of homelessness by providing a learning space for all of the community’s children to grow and thrive.

Birch Tree Hope House

The Mission
Birch Tree Communities is dedicated to helping make a full life in the community possible for those recovering from mental illness. Its new 16-bed Hope House crisis unit in Benton had to balance necessary treatment, supervision and security needs with a healing and nurturing residential environment — all within a limited budget.

The Result
From its gabled roofs to the central courtyard, the 8,900-square-foot, one-story Hope House feels decidedly non-institutional. Elements, such as a courtyard with gardens and seating spaces sheltered with a perforated metal privacy fence, were incorporated to offer access to outdoor spaces for therapy and for resting. An open floor plan with views to the outdoors and sight lines to the nurse’s station allow members to move comfortably through the building to the shared gym and activity spaces. A back porch connected to the courtyard provides a sense of freedom and autonomy without sacrificing security.

Designated administrative spaces for focused work and staff breaks increase efficiency and provide teleconferencing functionality for meetings. The result is an environment that enhances the well-being of those who both recover and work here.

Max Milam Library Renovation and Addition

Max Milam was chairman of the Political Science Department at the University of Arkansas, and founder of the University’s public administration program.  He was also the Director of the State Finance and Administration for Governor Rockefeller and Governor Bumpers.  He later became the Chief Financial Officer and Chairman of Rockefeller and Associates, and the Executor and Trustee of the Rockefeller Estate and Trust.  Max Milam was a tireless promotor for rural health care delivery and rural economic development in Perry County and Arkansas. www.cals.org

The Max Milam Library is a vital part of the community in Perry County and the county passed a mileage for the addition and renovation to the existing 5,000 square foot library. The existing 5,000 square feet was renovated to update and expand the circulation area, the staff services area, the Children’s Program and stacks area as well as the Teen’s stack area.  The addition consists of a meeting/community room, adult stack area, reading room, study rooms and new public restrooms.
