Sometimes people who are considering purchasing land for a project ask us to dissect it. Tell them what we think. We take in the views, vistas, solar angles, winds, topography, drainage, composition of soil, vegetation, approach and overall feel of a place. For three years, we worked with a family of nine searching for a site within the city limits where they could build a home and have some land. Finally, the search paid off – it wasn’t until they found this wonderful piece of land with a north view of Pinnacle Mountain, an existing baseball field, a pond and a Southern Living house that we told them to purchase the land (quickly), and we’ll work with the bones of the house. It was and still is a spectacular site. We kept a majority of the structure of the house, removed the existing front porch, brick, columns, dormers and pool in the back yard. We renovated the existing house, designed a bedroom addition, a separate garage/gym/studio apartment as well as re-positioned the new pool/outdoor fireplace at the front of the house with the view to Pinnacle.

We have not yet taken professional photos of the space, but couldn't wait to share them with you! These are a mixture of photos of the existing site before construction and after photos.

West Little Rock Residence

This new residence was designed for a family of four from Turkey who wanted a more contemporary house for living that reminded them of their past and gave them plenty of space to grow in the future.  Neutral color brick, simple forms with a simple floor plan celebrate the natural light and gathering spaces for this family.

Downtown office/house

In 2008, Jennifer Herron and Jeff Horton built their office-studio-residence in the SoMa (South Main Street) neighborhood of downtown Little Rock. After moving to Little Rock from Oakland and San Francisco, California, they wanted to experience what it would be like to live and work in the same building they designed with sustainable materials and efficient use of energy without breaking the bank.

They literally walk across the hall to work, pay, on average, $180 a month for utilities for 4,000 square feet, and continue to push good design for urban infill. This office-studio-residence surprises people because of its street presence, materials and design. It is an educational tool and is a topic for discussion of sustainable services and materials, such as the metal material on the exterior, types of insulation, geothermal heating and cooling (which received a 30% tax credit), natural day-lighting and ventilation, and simple, affordable living.

Our Work

This new residence in Paron was designed for a young family who wanted clean lines, durable materials and a house focused on the views of their seven acres. Neutral-colored stucco, horizontally coursed natural stone and a dark metal roof provided the exterior palette, delivering the clean lines that the owners desired as well as durability and harmony with the natural surroundings.

Residence in the Country

New Urban Residence

Having experienced living in a mid-century modern house in California, one of the owners wanted to incorporate similar elements in the design of their new house. Both owners appreciated and desired the same elements which are open interior living spaces, a connection to the outdoors, lots of natural light and an elegant simplicity.

House in the hills

Arkansas’ best known political cartoonist, the late George Fisher, referred to this project site as his “Bird Sanctuary.” Located at the end of a residential street and inhabited with bluejays, cardinals, scarlet tangers, a hawk and pileated Woodpeckers, this rocky terrain slopes 33 feet to a running creek, close to the home of a family of groundhogs. The client wanted a 3,300-square-foot house within this sanctuary. Not wanting to disrupt the site, the house was designed as a simple rectangle, 22′-0″ x 56′-0″ in size, tucked between the easements and setbacks. The house is clad in standing seam metal panels, a low-maintenance and green product, and incorporates low-VOC paint, bamboo flooring, dual-flush toilets, double-insulated windows, Energy Star-rated appliances and instant hot water heaters, but most importantly, is sited correctly on the land to take advantage of the natural elements without disturbing the environment.

House in the Hills

Residence in West Little Rock

With a slight gesture to traditional design on the exterior, the modern, open, light-filled interior was preferred by the clients for the design of their new house. The clients expressed the desire to have the kitchen as the metaphorical heart of the house so that they could work there but feel connected to the rest of the house — a place where they could sit, relax and share events of their day over food. The location of the kitchen became the pivot point situated between the living areas and the children’s playroom. From the kitchen area, there is visual access to the front door, through all the main rooms and outside to the pool.

With this open plan, the ceilings were lowered in the gathering areas to make these spaces more intimate and to help define the cooking and dining spaces. Partition walls were implemented to create a subtle transition from formal to informal areas. Because the clients loved to cook and entertain in their previous loft space in Chicago, they wanted a kitchen system that would look elegant within their home’s open floor plan and be both efficient and durable. Therefore, the German manufacturer, Bulthaup, known for ergonomic, visually refined designs, was brought on board as part of the project team.

I’ve always dreamed of having a clean, modernist home, and I’m happy to say that Alice and her team at Atelier Cohen led the way to making that dream a reality! I couldn’t be more happy with the project, my house looks like it could be featured in a Kinfolk magazine. I expressed my wishes of having a clean, natural interior aesthetic and they truly delivered – the natural light in my newly designed home is to die for.
